How to promote your Etsy shop on Pinterest
A step-by-step walkthrough of the setup, the weekly routine, and the mistakes that quietly waste months. Written for sellers who have a shop and limited time, not for marketers.
Step 1 — Set up a business account and claim your shop
Convert to a Pinterest business account first. It is free, it takes about two minutes, and it is what gives you analytics and API access for publishing. Your existing pins and followers carry over.
Then claim your Etsy shop URL under Settings → Claimed accounts. Claiming attributes every pin that links to your shop back to your profile, even pins other people create, and gives you the analytics for them. Sellers routinely skip this and lose attribution on pins their own customers made.
Step 2 — Build boards around what buyers are planning
The instinct is to mirror your shop sections. Resist it. Pinterest reads the board a pin sits on as a signal about what the pin is, so boards should describe the situation a buyer is planning for, not your internal catalogue structure.
- Good: 'Rustic Wedding Table Decor', 'Neutral Nursery Ideas', 'Cottagecore Kitchen'.
- Weak: 'My Products', 'New Arrivals', 'Shop Updates'.
- Five to ten focused boards outperform thirty thin ones.
- Write a real description for each board, with the terms someone would search.
Step 3 — Make the image portrait
Pinterest's feed is a vertical masonry grid, so a 2:3 portrait image at 1000×1500 occupies noticeably more of a scrolling screen than a square one. Your Etsy photos are square or landscape, so this is a real conversion step rather than a copy-paste — and it is the step most often skipped.
Product-on-white works on Etsy because buyers are already in a shopping context. On Pinterest the pin is competing with styled interiors, so a product shown in context, or styled against a background with room for text, will usually outperform the same photo on white.
Step 4 — Write the copy for Pinterest, not for Etsy
This is the most common and most costly mistake. An Etsy title like "Handmade Ceramic Mug Rustic Coffee Cup Stoneware Pottery Gift for Her Housewarming" is optimised for Etsy's algorithm, which rewards keyword density. Pasted into Pinterest, it reads as spam and performs worse than a plain sentence.
Write a title a person would say out loud, containing the phrase someone would search: "Rustic stoneware coffee mug, handmade for slow mornings". Then one or two natural description sentences covering what it is, who it suits and the occasion. Two to five specific hashtags at the end, not twenty.
Step 5 — Pin consistently, and pin ahead
Consistency beats volume decisively. Five to ten pins a week sustained for six months will outperform two hundred pins in one weekend followed by silence, because Pinterest's distribution favours accounts that publish steadily.
Pin seasonal products roughly 45 days before the season peaks. Pinterest users plan far ahead and pins need lead time to gather distribution, so Christmas stock should be live in October.
Vary the pins for a single listing rather than repeating one: a styled shot, a detail crop, a seasonal framing. Each can rank for a different search.
Step 6 — Measure the right things
Do not judge Pinterest on sales in month one; the lag is too long and you will draw the wrong conclusion. Watch outbound clicks first — that is traffic actually reaching your shop — then saves, which indicate a pin will keep being distributed. Impressions are the least useful of the three and the easiest to feel good about.
Give it three months before deciding. Most sellers quit at week two, which is roughly the point at which nothing has happened yet by design.
Making it survive contact with a real week
Everything above is straightforward and almost nobody sustains it, because it competes with making and shipping. If the routine is the part that breaks, PinFlow generates the image and copy from the listing URL so the weekly job becomes reviewing and approving rather than creating from scratch. Ten pins are free, which is enough to test the routine before committing to it.
Common questions
How do I connect my Etsy shop to Pinterest?
Claim your Etsy shop URL in Pinterest under Settings → Claimed accounts. Claiming attributes every pin linking to your shop back to your profile and unlocks analytics for them. It does not import your listings — publishing pins is a separate step.
What should I write in a Pinterest pin description?
One or two natural sentences describing what the product is and who it suits, using the words a buyer would type. Do not paste your Etsy title: Etsy titles are keyword-stacked for a different algorithm and read as spam on Pinterest, which suppresses rather than helps distribution.
How many boards should an Etsy shop have?
Five to ten focused boards beats thirty thin ones. Name them after what buyers are planning — 'Rustic Wedding Table Decor' rather than 'My Products' — because Pinterest reads board context when classifying a pin.
Should I use hashtags on Pinterest?
A few specific ones, at the end of the description. Hashtags matter far less on Pinterest than on Instagram — the searchable text of the title and description does the heavy lifting. Two to five relevant tags is plenty; twenty is counterproductive.
How far ahead should I pin seasonal products?
Around 45 days before the season peaks. Pinterest users plan well ahead, and pins need lead time to accumulate distribution, so Christmas pins should be live in October rather than December.
